San Francisco and Berkeley are amazing!! We started the day with a heavy session on Claremont in Berkeley. The road has a few large hairpins, and a number of us went down in a sketchy lefty. So unfortunately, my ankle is a bit banged up right now, but I should be good to skate tomorrow. From Berkeley, we headed to downtown to Skate on Haight, a rad skateshop in the Haight district, to show them the Loco! Then, we hit up Lombard street ! The famous road in San Fran that has like 6 hairpin turns on a brick road, with about 200 tourists watching us (I rode it despite the banged up ankle, I couldn't leave without riding that road)! It's pretty funny when an adorable Italian grandma tells you you have guts!!! From there, we headed back over to Berkeley to skate Tunnel Road, and some other small roads. The Berkeley hills are the gnarliest residential roads I've ever seen and of course Little Liam can RIP his local hills like no other! After tiring ourselves out, we headed over to party with the one and only JM Duran. Another epic day! Can't wait to see what Berkeley has to offer today!!

The Loco Is in San Francisco!!!

Hell Yes! We're going to do the Spring 2010 US Tour in the Loco Express again!! We still have Hoodie, Guff, Kibbling, Phillip Lemire, King Brian, and myself, but with the addition of Jennifer Tam, Nate Lang, and Woody from Whistler. We are planning on going to San Francisco and Berkeley, and Las Vegas, where we pick up Simon Pigeon, before heading to Ditch Slap. Timeship Racing hosts the yearly Ditch Slap, an illegal, but infamous event enabling about 60 of us to attack the drainage ditches of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This event is not for weak skaters, with high speeds, gnarly transitions, and unforeseen obstacles that require riders to remain alert and reactive. As an awesome contrast of skating skills, we are then picking up Nick Breton and heading to Boulder for the second year of the Buffalo Bill Downhill, which is a super technical high-speed race in the Colorado hills. From there, we are planning to head over to Salt Lake City, and then back over to the west coast to ride Mt. Baker and Maryhill before heading back to British Columbia in time for Attack of Danger Bay.
I am so stoked for this trip. In addition to the mobs of skaters poaching the ditches and the big mountain racing, we’re going to be skating some of the gnarliest roads, filming the best talents, and having the some of the best times of our lives.

Day One!!
Despite a scheduled departure time of 8am on Tuesday April 27th, the Loco didn’t manage to leave until about 9pm that night. The boys have been working on the bus without sleeping for about 3 days. But thanks to all their hard work, everything seemed to be in good working order! As opposed to last year, we have working brake lights, working turn signals, and even electricity! And, at the last minute, Phillip’s family hooked us up with a trailer, which makes the interior much more spacious and luxurious.
We finally got to the border at 11pm, at which point the border guards, not surprisingly, asked us to pull over. Unfortunately, we had accidentally left a Kontour camera still recording on the dash, which is illegal according to the guards. They were so pissed off that they seemed to try to make an example out of one of us. They decreed that Hoodie was no longer free to enter the US. We stood there dumbfounded; we couldn’t believe that Hoodie wasn’t going to be coming with us on the inaugural 2010 US tour. Hoodie took this news like a champ, still allowing us to take the Loco to the States, and putting King Brian in charge. After a quick crash course on emergency Loco mechanics, we left our fearless leader in Canada, wondering how on earth we were going to make this trip work without the one who built this beast.
Day One has melded into Day Two, as we had driven all Tuesday night and Wednesday day. Despite a small hiccup when a can of the trademark red Loco paint spilled all over the lockbox, we have been making decent time. In the early afternoon, we met up with Billy Bones to shred the microbowl in JP Rowan’s brainchild, Rip City Skates, in Portland, Oregon.
We thought we had this trip all under control, with the plan of arriving in San Francisco by around 1am Wednesday night. By the early evening, though, there was a wobbling in the rear wheels we couldn’t ignore any longer. Woody and King Brian got straight to work jacking up the Loco, and removing the rear passenger dually, in order to tighten up the studs on the rims. So far this plan has been working, but we’re worried that the rims are too stripped to make very far, necessitating a new emergency rim for the wheel. We’ll let you know how it goes, but we’re on our way.

Day 3
We spent this day all on the road!! After having to fix a few little problems, like a stripped wheel rim (uh oh, we need a new one soon!), and got the stereo system working, we started cruising and began the first dance party of this year's Loco trip!! All was good, and we rolled into Alameda in the Bay area to stay at Liam Morgan's house at about 1am.

Day 4
We're at Liam's house, sitting in the bright, sunny kitchen, drinking coffee, and eating breakfast. Awesome!! Soon, we'll be headed off to skate the epic, stupid-fast Berkeley hills, then to downtown San Francisco to the shop "Skate on Haight", skate the infamous Lombard St, and go over the Golden Gate Bridge! So Rad!!!

Christin and the gang are just south of the border in the loco. Hoodie was turned away at the crossing and now they got a busted rim in Oregon! But they'll make it, no doubt about it. I'm hanging at the skate house right now, we're getting ready to hit tuna, then it's off to Arizona tonight!

Maryhill Freeride 2010

No doubt you've already heard that Deano puts on a good show, and this year's event lived up to expectations. Over 100 riders, some who've been doing this for a handful of weeks to some that have been at it for longer than I've been alive. Few events can bring together such a crowd, but Deano manages to do just that. Riding in packs 30 people deep for 3 miles down a classic hill isn't something any of us gets to do too often, but when it happens we're all smiles.

Another weekend is here

With Crazyness planned for the next 3 weekend. And not enough skating happening on my part. Nick Jeans B-day Skate starts in about an hour, followed by a race at the end of the day.. That about summarizes this weekend. However next weekend is another story all on its own, a West Coast Convoy, followed by There's something Fishy outlaw on Vancouver Island. I have the task of organizing road clean-up, Sounds fun eh.. The weekend of April 23rd will be one of the best skate weekends of the year. Organized by Saltspring Local, Adrian English, Last years event Saw speeds of 80km/h plus into corners, truly a rad day and a rad course. This year will be even better with a higher start line and a freeride the following day, on the Skateboard Mecca, Saltspring Island.

Weirdness

This weekend has truly been a weird one. Jeff all the best to you and thank you for everything, "stay golden pony(tail) boy". With the demise of the Shawnigan Shredder, The hunt for a solid outlaw hill began. We set out with a two car convoy, from switchback at 730 am. A truly rediculous time to start skating. The convoy included some rad riders, and made for a very good day of skating. With Nick Jean, Luke Noland, Griffin Hopkins, and up and comers Jesse MacIntosh, and Matt Mclennan, and myself. We arrived at spot one Maple Bay, a BP's style developement outside of Duncan, there we skated fell and bodychecked each other until about 10:30am or so. After a healthy breakfast, we headed out to the race hill, It was soaked and covered in tree debris from wind storms past. A pretty good indication to the lack of traffic on the road, the hill even boasts a campground at the bottom...Bonus

Things kind of spiralled downhill from there, Griffin started a game of car tag, that lasted way to long, and I'll admit I lost. With a Car smeared with Chili and old deodorant, we headed to a recently paved logging road, in between Lake Cowichan and Port Renfrew. We had high expectations, and were let down. The 1km run had two hairpins that were butter smooth, however leading up to both corners and exiting were marbely coarse crappy pavement, this made things very slow, not to mention it was raining and snowing. After about an hour we called it quits and headed home for the day.

And so begun Sunday, I woke up to not knowing where my keys were. An awesome start, not so much, anyway out the door and off to work I went. I got back into town just in time for Sunday Sessions, armed with two go-pros Jesse and I headed off to Lost Lake, a classic Nanaimo run, to find it torn up and construction going on everywhere. We hit a few speed runs and headed to meet up with Tynan and Luke. Skated a while, and now here I sit at my parents house for Easter dinner.

A good weekend for sure and lots of footage, Hopefully a video will be up soon.

We owe Jeff a great deal of gratitude for all of the work he has put into Sayshun over the last year. Jeff is developing into an amazing rider and we are sorry to see him go. His charisma and stoke are contagious and we are glad to still call him a friend. We wish him luck and are sure to see him on the hill.

Epic Maryhill Freeride!

Thanks to Deano, this weekend’s freeride was a wicked success! About 120 riders and close to 40 runs in 2 days meant a whole lot of gnar-bar riding! On the first day, the sun was out and the road was fast! Almost everyone was pushing into the runs at the same time, resulting in some of the craziest pack riding ever! Everyone was given more runs down the hill than they could possibly take without collapsing with exhaustion.
After finishing up riding, everyone piled into their cars and headed over to the famous Ayatula Family Mexican Restaurant where you can get margaritas the size of your head! After stuffing ourselves silly, we skated to the bowling alley where Andrew Mercado had arranged for a raging party and a viewing of his new video, the “No Future”, which was a compilation of the raddest skate parts from the raddest skate scenes around. I have to say that Portland definitely stepped up for their portion of the video, showing the incredible talent that comes out of their region. After a few beers and a bit of a dance party, everyone skated back to the hotel before we could fall asleep standing up!
Day Two started a little more slowly as it was kind of drizzling. The wind was up though, so the clouds were mostly swept away, leaving the road almost all dry, with wet patches on occasion. So, everyone was a bit more cautious until the road cleared right up, allowing the fast pack riding to continue. Since my legs were a bit cramped up from the first day, I was thinking that I’d keep the riding pretty low-key. But something in the huge pack riding made me go faster that I should have been in my shorts and kneepads! Sadly though, the time came that we had to start heading home so we could make it back in time to get some sleep before work the next day. Anyways, to say the least, this weekend was one of the best posisbly ways to start off the season! Epic!

Maryhill Loops Road

Constructed from 1909 to 1913 by Samuel Hill (1857–1931), founder of Maryhill Museum of Art, Maryhill Loops Road is located off Washington Scenic Route 14 just east of U.S. 97. As the first macadam asphalt-paved road in the Pacific Northwest, it served as the only road between the Columbia River and Goldendale, Washington prior to the construction of U.S. 97. The historic Maryhill Loops was a part of a larger road that encompassed several miles over which seven different experimental roads were constructed.

The road itself ascends 850 feet in a series of curves with a gradient of ascent at 5%. In 1998, a 3.6 mile section of the road was completely refurbished and received the Outstanding Project of Historical Significance Award from the American Public Works Association, Washington State Chapter. It consists of 25 curves, 8 of which are hairpins.

Stoked!!

Vancouver has been off the hook this past week! Riders from Colorado, Sweden, Switzerland, and Cali have been trickling into the city, getting all the locals amped! The week kicked off with the video premier "Drop: My Life Downhill" which highlighted a number of the top speedboarders of the past year. Since then, we've been skating non-stop! I've had a couple days where we've been skating for about 7 hours minimum! I can barely feel my feet anymore! But, we just can't stop because how many days do you get to ride with Martin Siegrist, Eric Lundberg, James Kelly, Louis Pilloni, Kevin Reimer, Brianne Davies, Andrew Chapman, AJ Powell, Patrick Switzer, Adam Auger, Zak Maytum, Mike McGoldrick, and more of the most amazing skaters, all trying to pile into one car!? Oh man, not only have we been hitting the local hills like the BPs and the South Van alleys, we're heading to the Maryhill Freeride this weekend! I'm so incredibly stoked to be among those who get to experience all that Vancouver has to offer skaters in the springtime! Wish you could all be here!

Just thought I'd throw up a picture of Christin, one of my team mates here with Sayshun Longboards. Christin, you're super rad, keep doing what you're doing!

Now that I'm at it, I think one of my other team mates, Nick Breton, deserves some attention too! Nick not long ago designed a speed board for the lineup at Sayshun and soon will be released. Keep you're eyes peeled for that board folks.

I woke up this morning thinking how awesome a small roadtrip would be. I picked up two of the up and comers in Nanaimo and headed north to Courtenay. What a mistake that was, about ten minutes after we left partly cloudy and sunny Nanaimo, we found heavy rain. Hoping for the best we kept going, we hit snow as soon as we got to Courtenay. After a bit of freeriding and soggy corners we went for coffee and made our way back towards Nanaimo skating all the runs along the way. so here I sit writing this wet cold and tired.

Stuck in the frost bitten north

Welcome to 2010! Are you skating these days? We hope so.

Unfortunately for us Albertans we aren't, well at least not the way we want to be. Stuck with wet parkade sessions and indoor flat ground riding its hard to progress. I'm sure some of you have noticed that Sayshun is lacking new footage, well I'm sure you can imagine why. But don't stress out! Every night when the sayshun crew tucks in we dream about the fast approaching race season and all the fantastic fun/filming that is soon to come. Hold tight! a ton of rad stuff is on its way. So if you are stuck in the frost bitten north, remember, don't get the winter blues

and make the best of the skating you have! A slow, wet day of skating is better than a good day of work! Unless you have my job that is!

Living in a Winter Wonderland

Being this time of year living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, snow has begun to fall and the temperatures outside have dropped. It’s absolute, complete torture to sit at home and do nothing. No skating, nothing. It can make one think: Why the hell don’t we live somewhere warm like Arizona or California? I guess all us Calgarians can do is save up money and travel to warm vacation spots to get some skating in. For example Tony Graves has recently taken a trip to Australia for the World Championships, and George Mackenzie is soon flying to California. It’s leave town or yet again get well acquainted with the parking garage. Roads are still much better, but beggars can’t be choosers. Parking structures play host not only to Chinese-style chaos loonie races, but also to longboard hockey. In fact the one of those very games took place today in Edmonton.

On a side note Sayshun would like to throw a congratulations to Micah Green from Salt Lake City, Utah on his impressive second place finish at this year’s American Championships in Bonelli, California as well as his impressive placing at Newton’s Playground in Bathurst, Australia. He’s been repping the Speed for some time now. Micah, Sayshun loves you!

King of the Paths Nov. 21, 2009

Man, who would have guessed that Calgary's sporadic weather would have allowed us to skate so late in November, and be warm to boot. Possibly the last event to be hold in the 2009 season was the King of the Paths, held by none other that a true Sayshun supporter himself, Jeff Wilkins. Before the event even began, the riders got a great chance to freeride and bomb the track for practise.

To give you an idea of the track, take some boulders surrounding the fastest, turniest section, along with high speeds and sharp corners, and you get the path that this race was held on. The track itself had an elevation drop of around 150 feet and took just under one minute to race down. Keep in mind that this is a path! Looking down from the top, it was not possible to see the finish, or even around any of the corners at all! The timing was a little primitive, but for an outlaw event held in the middle of nowhere, it worked just dandy. Unfortunately for us Calgarians, Mike Sanders and Sayshun Team rider, Nick Breton, both showed all of us up by getting the two fastest times, around 52 seconds, followed by George and Team Rider Jeff 'Spicoli' Radomsky not far behind.

But it wasn't all about speed, a second portion to the timed heat competition was a style/freeride contest, with results contributing to the overall standings. As everyone knows, George Mackenzie is a steez machine busting crazy tricks and tricky maneuvers. The second portion to the competition was held on the lower half of the narrow track, with a few onlookers judging. Each of the 15 or so riders were given two runs each to impress the judges in four categories. In the end, four of the top contenders faced off in one final round of runs. Those four were George Mackenzie, and Sayshun Team riders, Jeff Radomsky, Nick Breton, and myself, Riley Harris.

Once the scores were tallied, fortunately for us, Calgarian George was left on top. Under him were Mike Sanders and Nick Breton from Edmonton respectively, followed by Jeff Radomsky, then Riley Harris in fifth. A huge thanks to Jeff Wilkins for putting on such a rad, well organized event, as well to all those who helped out. Without you guys, this race would not have flowed as smoothly as it did! As well a huge shout out to the events sponsors, Royal Board Shop and Sayshun Longboards for donating prizes.
